Many of the words at the very top of your word frequency analysis will be like this. Are there any words that seem not useful in any way out of context? (Remember my “mm-hmm”.) If so, add them. Look over at your word-frequency analysis. It’s a bit of a pain, but somewhat necessary. At the top of this window, there is an button that says “New”. Keeping the word frequency window open, open the sigma-sub-stoplist window once more. There may be a better way of doing this, but I wasn’t able to find one.ġ. Unfortunately, the way that MAXQDA is set up (and depending on the length of your dataset) this may have to be done in stages. Mumbled affirmations don’t really cut it as useful data, at least in what I’m looking for, so I wanted to add that, and other not-so-very useful words, to my stop list. My data set, for example, contained 71 “mmm-hmm”s. However, for many of us, this stop list won’t really be enough. Try running a lexical search (click on the blue sigma and follow the cues) now and see what a difference not having common articles and pronouns in your search window makes.

A window will open up, allowing you to locate your file on your computer. Before you do anything else, make sure that your stoplist file is closed…otherwise you’ll get a weird error message when you try to import it.ĥ. (Note that my stoplist is already imported here, don’t worry if your window doesn’t look the same.)ģ. Two icons over from this, there is an icon that looks like to blue sigma-sub-red circle with a white dash inside (you can see it highlighted in orange in the below screenshot). In MAXQDA, look for the large blue sigma on the top right-hand of the screen. save the stop list in a word processing program as either a Plain text file or in Rich Text Format (.rtf).Ģ. Importing one of these can save you a massive amount of time (I should know, I made one of my own before I realized he had one available.) To import it into MAXQDA, do the following:ġ. Standardized (?) stop lists can be found online, in fact, Dr.

So, as the first step in what will hopefully be a series of highly pragmatic posts in the next two weeks or so, I’m going to offer up detailed instructions to a necessary step that must be done before any word-frequency analysis, assuming, of course, that you want to obtain any kind of meaning from your analysis.

But in preparing to give my Workshop talk this Monday, I’ve been thinking through the steps of what I have done, why I have taken them, and thought it might be a damn good idea to write everything down before it slips my mind entirely. Gravlee’s advice and writing a memo every time a (relevant) thought occurs, and never ever editing them. I’ve been compensating for it in part through memo-writing in MAXQDA I’ve been taking Dr. Sorry I haven’t written anything in awhile, the semester kind of got away from me and as long as the work was getting done, writing about it got shoved to the back burner.
